TouchStone Writers workshops, like our writers groups, are modeled on the Amherst Writers and Artists method of small group facilitation, which affirms each participant's unique voice and creative potential in a non-hierarchical setting. TouchStone Writers workshops also provide safe, supportive, and constructive community, specifically to writers with disabilities. But unlike our Burlington, Vermont-based writers groups, TouchStone Writers workshops are offered to, and can be adapted to suit, diverse disability communities across the US and Canada.

Most TouchStone Writers workshops are intensive, day- or weekend-long explorations of creative writing in community. The immediate purpose of these workshops is to share skills and strategies for self-expression and creative development. Lead facilitator Leslie Freeman introduces participants to TouchStone Writers' history, philosophy, and method, then guides participants through a variety of open-ended writing exercises. Participants (and facilitator) write and read emerging work together. Typical tuition is $80 per person; scholarships are available.
TouchStone Writers workshops are unique opportunities for culture and community-building. Our workshops begin to establish lasting trust, connection, and artistic exchange between writers with disabilities and allies. Because community is essential to our mission, some workshops may be available for shorter engagement and/or reduced fees. For example, Leslie will present the hour-long workshop “Necessary Stories: Writing in Community With Survivors” to health care providers at the Mazzoni Center's 2008 Philadelphia Trans Health Conference.
